An Ode to Calypso

Calypso music was my first touch-point with speaking truth to power. At a young age, it allowed me to discuss and explore hard truths all disguised under the whimsical nature of song and storytelling. Calypso’s clever sophistication continues to enthrall me. Its satire, politically-laced themes and thought-provoking lyrics.

Ancestrally, Calypso was an art form of protest. From origination, there has always been a heightened energy around the risks taken in Calypso music. Masterfully crafted by enslaved people in the Caribbean…
